Revelation Chapter 10

1. And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

Can you see who verse 1 is describing? It is amazing when we consider we already know what so many of these spiritual words mean, but few know where these interpretations come from. Many of these terms have been understood for hundreds of years, but how do we prove these beliefs? We need to understand the predicament we have put ourselves in. Today it is just too easy to pick up a book, and read someone’s thoughts on what this, or that verse may mean. Many of the thoughts recorded in the books of today are not original thoughts, but rather recycled or copied studies. The problem with this is, many of the insights we accept today are often twice removed from the Bible, the word of God. In other words, much of what we are taught today is not an interpretation from the Bible, but one’s thoughts on another person’s interpretation. We need to realize this is not a safe route to follow. Can we really place the outcome of our eternal lives in some one else’s hands?

In this study we will use the age old method of proving everything from the Bible. We will use no other source but the Bible to interpret verse 1.

KJV Exodus 13:21. And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22. He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

KJV Exodus 16:10. And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

KJV Exodus 19:9. And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord.

KJV Numbers 12:5. And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.

KJV Psalms 68:34. Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.

KJV Daniel 7:13. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him

KJV Matthew 17:5. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

KJV Matthew 24:30. And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Throughout the Bible the word cloud is used to represent God and His presence upon the earth.

KJV Revelation 4:3. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

KJV Genesis 9:12. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13. I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

The word rainbow and bow actually mean the same thing in the Bible. Neither is used very often in the Bible, but the rainbow is associated with God, and His promise

We can easily see from the above text that verse 1 is describing Christ.

2. And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

In Chapter 5 we had looked at some of the books mentioned in the Bible. Here we see a new book described. There is nothing linking this book with any of the other books mentioned in the Bible. We could assume that this book may be the same book mentioned in Daniel 12. A close examination will show the seven thunders sealed in Revelation 10. In Daniel the book is sealed until the last days. Are the thunders and the book in Daniel related?

We have already seen in chapter 7, a sea on earth can represent people. The question here seems to be why the angel has one foot on the sea and the other on the earth. To find the answer to this question we should find out if the Bible has an explanation of exactly what the earth represents.

KJV Genesis 1:1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

KJV Genesis 1:10. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

The book of Genesis tells us that God created the earth.

KJV Genesis 6:17. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. 18. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee. 19. And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 20. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

In the same book we see it was God, who destroyed almost everything on the earth with a flood.

KJV Genesis 18:18. Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

KJV Exodus 31:17. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

KJV Numbers 16:32. And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

KJV Deuteronomy 5:8. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

The word earth is used in so many different contexts in the Bible, therefore it is difficult to determine one spiritual meaning the word earth could represent. But there is one context that is used over and over in the Bible.

KJV Deuteronomy 10:14. Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

KJV Joshua 4:24. That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.

KJV 1 Kings 8:60. That all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else.

KJV Psalms 8:9. O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

KJV Psalms 24:1. The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

KJV Isaiah 45:18. For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else.

KJV Isaiah 52:10. The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Texts describing the earth in the Bible are abundant. One simple truth stands out among all others, God created the earth. The earth and all within are God’s. God wants His word spread through out the earth. And God offers salvation to everyone on the earth.

What does it mean when we see an angel standing with his right foot upon the earth, and his left foot upon the sea? A closer look at the verses used to describe the sea in chapter seven shows a sea is often associated with evil people. Although there are texts not shown here describing evil people upon the earth, the majority of texts containing the word earth, deal with God, and His attempt to reach it’s inhabitants. It is within the context of Revelation 10 to say, this angel was sent to speak onto both classes of people, those who follow God, and those not following God.

3. And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

4. And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

Here are two words we have already studied. The first word is seven. If we look back to Chapters 1 and 5 we will see many meanings the number seven can relate to. One of the most significant being the end of pain and evil from this earth, symbolized by the release from slavery.

The second word is thunder, which we have seen in Chapter 4. Thunder has a relationship to an announcement. When we put these two spiritual meanings together, we see there is about to be an announcement concerning our release from this world. We are not given clues as to why John was not given permission to write what these seven thunders had uttered. All we know at this point is the fact that what ever John heard, is not written in this chapter.

5. And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

6. And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

7. But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

Mystery of God

The question here is, what is this mystery of God? As we look through the Bible we see the word mystery most often used to describe the work of Christ.

KJV Romans 16:25. Now to him that is of power to stabiles you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 26. But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: 27. To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

KJV 1 Corinthians 2:7. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

KJV Ephesians 3:2. If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 3. How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4. Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5. Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

Now that we see the mystery of God is the knowledge of Jesus Christ, how does that help us to understand what the meaning of a finished mystery is? Is this verse linked to KJV Revelation 14: 6. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7. Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Is this verse in Chapter 10 simply reinforcing the angel’s message in Revelation 14?

8. And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.

9. And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

10. And I took the little book out of the angel’s hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.

11. And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.

Revelation 10 seems to have very close ties to both Revelation 14 and Daniel 12.

Daniel 12:1. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. 4. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. 8. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? 9. And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10. Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
