2 Timothy 2:1-3 What to Teach

Posted by adventbiblestudy on October 4, 2013

2 Timothy 2:1-3 NLTse Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. (2) You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. (3) Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

In Paul’s introduction to chapter 2, he reminds Timothy what he taught him. Remember Paul learned what to preach at the feet of Jesus. It took three years for Paul to learn. To understand Paul’s letters you have to look at the letter as a whole. First off— here is what Timothy is told to preach, “things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses.” Of course Paul is only referring to one thing, Jesus’ ministry that was witnessed by many reliable people. See how we are only supposed to teach these things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses?

2 Timothy 2:4-8 NLTse Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them. (5) And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. (6) And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. (7) Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. (8) Always remember that Jesus Christ, a descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This is the Good News I preach.

Look at the three examples Paul used. A soldier who learns how to take orders – but Paul does not use that aspect – Paul knows people who have God’s Spirit have common sense. Paul also knows Jesus soldiers have to be reminded not to go over to the enemy – who designs a false message knit around the world. But look at the world and how God’s Word is preached today. Everything taught today is based on the world. Oh this relates to that and this symbol is for that thing IN THIS WORLD. All the messages today point to the affairs of the world. ALL OF THEM!!!! They forgot the message Jesus gave to Paul – Paul gave to Timothy — Timothy was told to teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. The enemy has been allowed to break ranks because he changed God’s message in an attempt to cover up God’s plan of salvation – the GOOD NEWS!!

Athletes have to follow rules. Paul locked away a portion of these rules in his letters. The world has become so blind – they can’t see the rules in simple black and white. To understand Paul’s letters you HAVE TO look at each and every text Paul refers to. If you don’t – you break ranks and let the enemy in. This is what Paul taught and how he was instructed to teach it. Send people back to scripture in a particular pattern. You will only learn that pattern if you take the time to look up every text and let God’s Spirit lead instead of getting caught up n the affairs of the world.

You will only enjoy the fruits of your labor with God’s Spirit when you put away the affairs of the world and follow the rules. You want to make your own rules and follow them? You will never understand. You will never produce fruit. Farmers have to follow a particular pattern. Farmers have rules. Paul could not have explained this to Timothy in easier terms. Paul concentrated on one of the rules of Bible study Jesus taught – to send people back to scripture. Another rule Jesus taught was to look back and compare events. We also see this rule illustrated in Paul’s letters.

2 Timothy 1:9-14 NLTse For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time–to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. (10) And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. (11) And God chose me to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of this Good News. (12) That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return. (13) Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me–a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. (14) Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

What plan is Paul referring to? God’s plan of salvation – the GOOD NEWS he told Timothy to teach. Paul never strayed from God’s plan. Paul revealed God’s plan in his letters in the way he was instructed to preach, teach, and write – through God’s WORD. Paul constantly referred to the prophecies Jesus fulfilled. Paul often referred to 6-8 scriptures in a row. When you read these you’ll find out – Paul’s letters only contain 10% of the message. Paul was smart enough to leave 90% of the message up to God’s Spirit and HIS WORD.

How far the world has strayed from God’s simple message and his plan of salvation…. but God told about this long ago and repeated the lesson so many times – we should have never missed it. The fact the world today cannot see who, what, when, where, and how the message has been repeated testifies to how far it has drifted away from God.
