John 17 The Truth

Posted by adventbiblestudy on August 17, 2012

Thoughts of a new believer. I don’t know. I just don’t see this. I don’t see it in the churches and I don’t see it much in the world at all. So why did Jesus talk about this so much? Was He wasting Him time, or has man really convinced himself and the world man’s form of worship is better than the simple one Jesus taught and asks for?

John 17:15-23 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. (16) They do not belong to this world any more than I do. (17) Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. (18) Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world. (19) And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth. (20) “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. (21) I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one–as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. (22) “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. (23) I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.

Jesus asks His Father to protect us in this world.

He knows we have to stay in this world for a time,

He wants us to learn that the only truth is in God’s Word.

Jesus is sending us into the world to teach this truth.

What truth does He want us to teach? This is the important part.

“And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.”

This brings us right back to verse 1, the introduction to Chapter 17. This is the theme of the entire chapter. Every line should be studied within this context.

John 17:1 After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you.

Jesus is talking about His sacrifice. While He is facing torture, ridicule, pain, suffering and death, Jesus refers to all of it as God glorifying His Son, and He is giving the glory back to His Father. Do we understand that? Do we see the lesson? Are we willing to learn?

Jesus now begins to ask His Father for a blessing on His true followers.

“I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one–as you are in me, Father, and I am in you.”

Why does Jesus ask for only this one blessing?

“May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”

Jesus once again explains how we are supposed to learn this, “perfect unity.”

“I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one.”

We seem to forgot what we are supposed to teach. Once again, what is this perfect glory?

“And I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they can be made holy by your truth.”

So why do we live in a world that prides itself on dividing His followers with doctrines and prophecies? Did they miss the real message, the truth?
