Genesis 2:21-22: Adam’s Rib

Posted by Ez1 Realty on May 30, 2012

Genesis 2:21-22 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; (22) And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

God saved the greatest gift for last, a constant reminder of His love. Adam already knew how God’s love flows both ways, now he was given a wife to share that experience with.

No one knows for certain why God chose to form Eve from one of Adam’s rib. Was it a testimony of the detail God designed into the human body, or of God’s healing power? Was it to illustrate the close relationship God intended for a man and his wife? Was God teaching Adam a lesson? Adam had to first give up a rib before God was able to give him a wife. Does love always require a sacrifice?

A rib is part of the bone structure which forms the body. Specifically ribs protect the heart and lungs. It is strong, curved, but only wraps around half the body.

How did God form Eve from a rib? Did the Lord begin with the single rib, making it one of Eve’s, forming the remaining parts of the body around it? Was Eve’s heart formed behind Adam’s rib?

After God perfectly formed a wife for Adam, He brought her to Adam. It was the second time Adam opened his eyes. This time he looked up to see His Creator standing next to his new wife. It was a scene Adam would never forget as both helped him to his feet. Could words ever be written to express Adam’s love for his wife, and gratitude to his God, Creator, and friend?

All of this illustrated the image of God formed within Adam. Through out creation, God was giving to man. Everything God spoke into creation, He spoke for man’s benefit. This is further illustrated in the personal manner in which God formed man from dust, planted Eden, presented every creature for Adam to name, and formed his wife from a rib. God did all of this to serve His new creation, man. Now it was Adam and Eve’s turn to share the example of perfect love God had shown them.
