Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
God created Adam and gave him dominion over every living creature of the newly created world. This showed both the trust and wisdom God placed in Adam. It is a testimony revealing some of the details of what it means be created in God’s image. Notice both Adam and Eve were created in God’s image. What does it mean to be created in God’s image? Only a small portion of that question is answered in the first few chapters of Genesis. The complete answer God wanted to provided is scattered throughout His entire book, written over generations by His servants the prophets.
God created the earth in a six days. During these six days God provided everything the world needed. Before He created man, every need was met. God provided sunlight, warmth, food, and finally companionship. The earth was in perfect balance and harmony. Beauty surrounded every scene to captivate the eyes. The air was filled with fragrances and song. Water was clean and refreshing. Every detail of God’s creation was designed to attract attention, teach lessons, and provide a soothing reminder of God’s love.
The same is true for the relationship God created. Every entity of God’s wonderful creation was founded upon a relationship. Man and woman were special. They were the only creatures created in God’s image, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The most precious gift from God was reserved for Adam and his wife, the love God has for His creation from the greatest mammoth, to the smallest creature.
The words, “created man in his own image,” clearly indicate a leadership role based on the preceding verse in which God give Adam dominion over the fish, birds, cattle, and every creeping thing. Adam’s leadership role is based upon God’s image, and only God’s image. This is how and why man was created, to rule this world in God’s image. We are shown examples man’s original role in the gospels. He that is greatest among you shall be your servant. (Matthew 23:11)
It was not by mistake God summed up man’s role as leader by reminding us we owe everything to Him. In two small verses God placed a reminder of His creation, the responsibilities man has to the world, and his wife. Everything was do be done in the image of God.
