Defiled Bed Genesis 49

KJV Genesis 49:3. Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: 4. Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
What does this prophecy mean? What does a bed represent and how is it defiled? A physical bed is used for two purposes, to rest and a marriage relationship.
Job 33:15 KJV In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
KJV Job 7:13. When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; 14. Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions: 15. So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life.
Isaiah 57:2 KJV He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.
The above texts show a bed is used for slumber, sleep, comfort, and rest. In modern English they may seem to have the same meaning, but this shows why it is important to let the Holy Spirit lead the way. These words carry a drastically different spiritual meaning, and illustrate the point, only the word of God can properly interpret the word of God.
Slumber and Sleep
Proverbs 6:10-11 KJV Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: (11) So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
Isaiah 56:10-11 KJV His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. (11) Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.
Nahum 3:18-19 KJV Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them. (19) There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
Psalms 121:4-5 KJV Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (5) The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
Slumber and sleep are defined as spiritual poverty, greed, lack of understanding, and spiritually wounded. God does not slumber or sleep.
Comfort and Rest
Acts 9:31 KJV Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
Psalms 94:18-19 KJV When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up. (19) In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Isaiah 49:13 KJV Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.
Isaiah 61:1-2 KJV The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; (2) To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Leviticus 23:3 KJV Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Exodus 31:17-18 KJV It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. (18) And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Once we interpret the spiritual meaning of comfort and rest we see the contrast between slumber and sleep. Comfort comes to God’s people, and delights their souls through the Holy Ghost.
Rest has the most significant spiritual meaning. It is found within God’s commandments and is defined as the seventh day.
To understand the defiled bed, we need to know the definition of the word defiled.
