Pearl of Great Price Matthew 13:45
Posted by adventbiblestudy on February 10, 2009
KJV Matthew 13:45-4645. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:46. Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
What is the physical meaning of the text?
The kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant looking for good pearls. When he finds one pearl of extreme value, he sells everything he has and buys it. This must be a pearl of great value for someone to give up everything they own in the world to obtain it.
Identify the key words. In this case we will look at only one word, pearl.
KJV Job 28:18-20
18. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
20. Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
KJV Revelation 21:21
21. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
A pearl has only two spiritual descriptions within the Bible, wisdom and the gates to the Heavenly city.
Pearl = gate to heaven or wisdom
When we substitute the spiritual meaning for the word pearl we may paraphrase Matthew 13:45-46 much like the following:
When a merchant finds a gateway to Heaven, he will sell all he has to gain access.
