Matthew 8:18-22 MKJV And seeing great crowds, Jesus gave orders to depart to the other side. (19) And a certain scribe came and said to him, Master, I will follow You wherever You go. (20) And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. (21) And another of His disciples said to him, Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father. (22) But Jesus said to him, Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead.
After healing every person who came to Him, Jesus turned to His disciples and told them to make ready to sail to the other side of the sea. As John and James prepared the humble craft for the evening voyage Jesus looked upon the crowd pondering the seeds which had just been planted. He looked to His left where a small group of priests and scribes stood witnessing the miracles.
They moved forward as a group approaching the Son of God. Knowing they had questions Jesus prayed for guidance from the Spirit. The group stopped a short distance away while one of the scribes continued on his course. Standing in front of Jesus the Scribe spoke, “Master, I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” One of the priests commented, “foxes come in the night to steal our chickens much like this man comes to steal from our flock.” His tone was intentionally loud making certain all within hearing distance knew his thoughts. Jesus pondered the response for a moment, while praying for guidance.
A few moments later John proclaimed the craft worthy and ready for the short journey. As Jesus turned toward the shore one of his disciples came between Him and the priests, asking Jesus, “allow me first to go and bury my father.” Making eye contact with the boastful priest Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead.” Without another word, Jesus entered the ship with His disciples.
