Matthew 8:28-34: Jesus Heals the Demonics

Matthew 8:28-34 MKJV And when He had come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, two demon-possessed ones met Him, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one might pass by that way. (29) And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with You, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time? (30) And there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine, feeding. (31) And the demons begged Him, saying, If You cast us out, allow us to go away into the herd of swine. (32) And He said to them, Go! And when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters. (33) And those who fed them fled. And going into the city, they told everything, and what had happened to the ones who had been possessed of demons. (34) And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged that He would depart out of their borders.

Little was discussed during the remainder of the night as the disciples contemplated the events of the storm, and how Jesus vanquished the powers of darkness with His word. John and James continued their slow steady pace through the clam waters until they heard the sandy shore slide along the bottom of the ship. After securing the oars, they jumped out into the shallow water, pulling the ship onto the shore. One by one the disciples climbed onto solid ground waiting for Jesus’ next instructions.

They arrived on shore just as the sun was coming up over the horizon where shouts and cries of anguish were heard. It was difficult to determine the origin of the sound. It was neither man, nor animal, at least not any the disciples had encountered before. Holding their hands to their foreheads to shade them from the rising sun, they made out a pair of human images on the horizon.

As the two men moved closer the disciples could make out the bent and twisted images a pair of humans figures covered with open wounds and covered in blood. Shackles and chain links hung from each arm clanking away as they wildly waved their arms is a show of defiance. When the figures approached close enough to show their matted hair, and twisted agony on their faces, fear filled the hearts of the disciples as they darted behind Jesus. With the memory of the storm still fresh in their minds instinct moved them to safety.

Huddled together between the ship and Jesus the disciples watched in horror as Jesus stepped closer to engage the demented men, who let out a series of howls and screams in an attempt to discourage the Son of God. Finally one of the demons spoke. “What have we to do with You, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?

Jesus knew the demons could not harm Him. As long as He was obedient to God and carrying out His work, He was under God’s supreme protection. The demon asked, “what have we to do with You?” Implying they were in control. The demons viewed the world as their domain, and all it’s souls their possessions. Little more than toys to play with and occupy their time. This was the greater understanding they believed Satan promised to deliver.

The demons addressed Jesus as the Son of God. They knew who He was, and they knew the power at His command. They also indicated they knew their reign would one day come to an end. On one hand the demons tried to believe, because Jesus was now in their world, He was under their control. In reality the demons knew they were no match for Jesus. They may have put on a display of superiority for a time, but in the end they knew their time had come. God’s perfect plan of salvation was in motion, and the demons hope for victory was quickly disappearing. Thousands of years of preparation had thus far failed. They could not defeat Him as an infant, nor a little boy. Jesus passed the trials of a teenager and a young adult. Now He stood before the demons as a man. In Him the demons could see His glory. Not the same shining glory they remembered when Jesus sat upon His throne in Heaven, but the glory of His heart, forever one with His Father still remained.

The demons knew they were no match for Jesus’ power and glory. They knew Jesus was about to heal the poor men held against their will. Even though it appeared the demons had total control of the two men, Jesus still heard a faint cry for help. Looking for an acceptable way out they looked around and saw a herd of swine grazing in a nearby field. The demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, allow us to go away into the herd of swine.” Jesus studied the anguish on the faces of the two men as he felt their inward cries for help. Jesus knew the freedom they were seeking. Jesus looked over at the swine, then back at the men, and said, “go!”

In an instant the faces of the two men changed. Below the blood, under the wounds, a look of peace now replaced anguish. Their entire bodies relaxed. They no longer showed signs of involuntary twitches. They looked down at their bodies as if seeing them for the first time. Finally they looked at Jesus, dropped to their knees thanking Him over and over again for their release until a commotion in the field caught their attention.

The herd of swine began to act wrestles. At first they showed signs of irritation, then anger toward one another. The larger hogs began demonstrating dominance over the smaller, then against each other. The battles became more and more violent until the smallest began to run for safety. This began a chain reaction as one after another began to give chase. It was as if they could smell fear and were determined to find pleasure in exploiting it. The frightened mass followed by the stronger vengeful swine raced up, over, and down a steep hill, straight into the sea with no regard for life. As the swine crashed head long into the rocks at the bottom, devilish shrills could be heard over the pounding of battered bodies, and thrashing swine in the water. Soon they all lay motionless, dead. The demons had gained a victory, small, but in their eyes decisive.

The men watching the herd of swine stood helpless as the event unfolded before them. They had no power to change the outcome, no hope of saving a single pig. Their hearts sank as they watched their livelihood, income, security, their entire lives first controlled and then destroyed before their eyes.

The herdsman ran up the hill, stood at the top and surveyed the damages. All was lost. Not a single swine remained. They turned, looked at Jesus, then ran into town to report the entire matter.

Arriving in town they shouted to gather every person. They began to relate the story in their own words. “All of our swine are dead. We do not even have a pair for breeding. We are finished, we have lost our income, our living. What are we going to do?” One of the village elders asked, “how did his happen?” The lead herdsman answered, “a group of men came by ship in the early morning. They landed right where the crazy men live, by the tombs. The crazy men came out to scare them away, like they always do. Instead of just getting back in their ship and leaving, one of them begins talking to the crazies. The next thing we know is, the entire herd runs up over the hill and plunges into the sea.” The elder questions, “do you think these new visitors had anything to do with it?” The herdsman answers, “I think the one that talked with the crazies gave them the idea.” The elder asked, “an idea for what? How did they force the herd to run into the sea and kill themselves?” The herdsman thought for a moment, turned to confer with the other workers, then answered the elder, “we don’t know, but it happened.” The elder turned to the crowd and announced, “we have a stranger among us, I do not understand the powers he has, but they are not for our good. We must make certain they leave, and leave now.”

The entire town followed the elders and herdsmen as they made their way to the beach. On the way they met Jesus followed by His disciples, and the two men released from the demons. Sensing their anger Jesus stopped when He saw the crowd. The entire village stopped then they surrounded Jesus on three sides. Only the head elder spoke. “We’ve been told what you did to our swine. Do you realize what you did? How are we supposed to eat, and support our families? You brought this curse on us. We want nothing to do with you. Please leave now before you bring more destruction on us.”

One of the men Jesus healed was about to speak up when Jesus reached back to silence him. Jesus did not answer a word, but turned around. His disciples opened a path for Him as He headed back for the ship.

When they arrived at the ship, one of the men freed from the demons begged Jesus to let Him go with Him. Jesus told the man, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and has had mercy on you..” Jesus entered into the ship followed by his disciples. John and James pushed the ship back into the sea, and they headed to Decapolis.

Matthew 8:23-27: Jesus Calms the Sea

Matthew 8:23-27 MKJV And He entering into a ship, His disciples followed Him. (24) And behold, a great tempest arose in the sea, so much so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. (25) And His disciples came to Him and awakened Him, saying, Lord, save us! We perish! (26) And He said to them, Why are you afraid, little-faiths? Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. (27) But the men marveled, saying, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

James and John stood in the shallow water, one on each side of the small ship, holding it steady as first Jesus, then the other disciples entered in. James and John shoved the boat out into deeper water before leaping in. The ship drifted along on the calm glassy water as the two fishermen arranged the oars and began rowing. Looking up at the stars visible beyond the clouds Peter commented, “we could not ask for a more peaceful night.”

The disciples exchanged memories of the people they had just seen Jesus heal. They were all talking at once when Simone chimed in, “wait, wait, wait! The best one was the little girl with the old woman who coughed so much she couldn’t speak. I think the little girl was her voice. Like there was some type of spiritual connection between them.” Philip added, “I remember those two. I think you are right. Remember Jesus placed His hand on the child’s head, and the old woman stopped coughing.” Simone added, “yes, and remember the first words the old woman spoke? Thank you Melissa. That was touching. I think everyone expected her to thank Jesus.” Philip replied, “we don’t know how long the little girl stood by the old woman’s side. I may have been years.” As they talked Judas sat quietly dropping one coin at a time from the fingers of his right hand into the palm of his left, appreciating the chinking sound of each coin.

Sitting on the floor of the ship leaning back against the side, Andrew began to tell his favorite story. “The one I will never forget was the old farmer. He came to Jesus with one finger and a thumb on his right hand. I remember thinking, he must have become accustomed to his condition by now. He acted as if he had only come to observe, not to be healed. It was as if Jesus sought after him, reached out, took his hand, and made his hand whole. How did Jesus put fingers back on a hand that was missing them?”

Everything grew silent for a moment as small waves began to splash against the side of the ship. Thomas questioned, “I wonder how many of those people really needed healing, and how many came just to see if Jesus could cure everyday aches and pains?”

A low rumble of thunder was heard in the distance. John said to his brother, “we better pick up the pace, it sounds like a storm is rolling in.” James and John rowed at a quickened pace. Years of working together taught them how to work as a single unit in perfect rhythm. Peter looked back up into the sky, “the stars disappeared.” John assured him, “this is not the ocean, we will eventually hit land.” John had confidence in his ability, that of his brother, and the special connection they shared which allowed them to match each others pace, and keep the ship on course.

A flash of lightening lite the sky for a second showing the small ship was surrounded by nothing but water. The wind came rushing down the distant mountains like an army of battle horses charging the enemy for a quick and decisive victory. The disciples were first hit by the wind, followed by waves, and finally a torrent of rain which came down in buckets. John shouted out orders, “bail, keep low, row for your life!”

In a second the disciples were soaked by the rain, then the waves coming up over the sides of the ship. John and James put every muscle, every ounce of energy into their efforts to row against the wind and waves. They were determined to triumph against the elements. Large muscular arms toned and refined by years of manual labor were no match for the relentless storm. Aching backs and tired arms were soon over come by fatigue. Fear kept them battling on.

The weight of the water began to bring the ship lower and deeper into the water. Judas tied his purse to his belt, allowing him to use both hands and joined the others in a loosing battle against the elements of the wind, rain, and sea.

The rain was heavy, great flashes of lightening allowed them to see only a short distance into the darkness. Hopelessness began to set in as the wind and rain attacked them like screaming demons. Amid the physical turmoil they were facing the unseen Spirit of the Lord turned their minds to Jesus. As a single unit the disciples went to the back of the ship where they found Jesus sound asleep, wrapped in a wet blanket. Raising their voices in scattered pleas they said, “Lord, save us! We perish!” Jesus looked up at His frightened group of followers and questioned them, “why are you afraid? Where is your faith?” Amid the raging waves and roaring winds Jesus stood up. His stature was a stark contrast to the group of men now huddled below Him. With a determined look on His face, Jesus raised both His arms towards Heaven and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. The wind and rain stopped as suddenly as it had begun. The sea was once again calmed. Jesus looked down at the surprised faces looking up at Him, praying they all learned the lesson from the trial they had just faced. But the men marveled, saying, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Jesus sat down in the back of the small ship and asked, “are we ready to continue on our journey?”

Matthew 8:18-22: Foxes and the Dead

Matthew 8:18-22 MKJV And seeing great crowds, Jesus gave orders to depart to the other side. (19) And a certain scribe came and said to him, Master, I will follow You wherever You go. (20) And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. (21) And another of His disciples said to him, Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father. (22) But Jesus said to him, Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead.

After healing every person who came to Him, Jesus turned to His disciples and told them to make ready to sail to the other side of the sea. As John and James prepared the humble craft for the evening voyage Jesus looked upon the crowd pondering the seeds which had just been planted. He looked to His left where a small group of priests and scribes stood witnessing the miracles.

They moved forward as a group approaching the Son of God. Knowing they had questions Jesus prayed for guidance from the Spirit. The group stopped a short distance away while one of the scribes continued on his course. Standing in front of Jesus the Scribe spoke, “Master, I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” One of the priests commented, “foxes come in the night to steal our chickens much like this man comes to steal from our flock.” His tone was intentionally loud making certain all within hearing distance knew his thoughts. Jesus pondered the response for a moment, while praying for guidance.

A few moments later John proclaimed the craft worthy and ready for the short journey. As Jesus turned toward the shore one of his disciples came between Him and the priests, asking Jesus, “allow me first to go and bury my father.” Making eye contact with the boastful priest Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their dead.” Without another word, Jesus entered the ship with His disciples.

Isaiah 52:7-15: God’s Call to Service

(Isaiah 52:7 KJV) How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

I stand upon God’s mountain, in His presence, seeing all His glory, understanding His ways, and the direction He has prepared for my life. The beauty of the feet represent service to others. Feet washed by Jesus, a demonstration of His love for me, an illustration of the service I owe to others placed in my path. To bring them good tidings, news of His peace through His love freely offered, and salvation through His sacrifice and blood. The battle is won. Death is defeated. Salvation is only a prayer away. My sins are forgiven, paid for by the blood of my Savior, my Friend, and Bother, Jesus Christ. My God that reigns in all the earth and Heaven.

(Isaiah 52:8 KJV) Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

God sends forth His message with me, a common person. Nothing special, just the time to read His words and pray for understanding until I can see the simple message He has for a single person in my life. God sends the singers before His army. The enemy is confused because they do not know His ways, or His thoughts. They stand still while God’s message is delivered. Will they hear? Will they repent. Will they listen to God’s call and come back to His love, protection, and accept His salvation?

(Isaiah 52:9 KJV) Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

The price has been paid, Jesus has defeated the enemy. His perfect love, life, and sacrifice is accepted by God, and all are redeemed to God and His grace. Sing out with joy. The earth has been wasted, but Jesus has built a better place in Heaven. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2 KJV)

(Isaiah 52:10 KJV) The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

We have the technology. God has placed a gift in my hands. I can use it for good, or follow Satan to use it for evil. One click and this message will go around the world. I know because I have seen it. God can send a butterfly over the ocean, guiding it on a safe journey from one continent to another to bring life to a new generation. God’s Spirit can reach across the waters. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:2 KJV) The message of God’s salvation can be seen, can be sent around the world, faster and more effectively than anyone ever imagined when these verses were written. God has provided. God has lead. God has given His message. God has trusted me to be a small part in His plan of salvation. It is my choice to accept His salvation. It is my choice to serve the LORD.

(Isaiah 52:11 KJV) Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

The Lord directs me to be out in the world to be among the needy, the poor in spirit, to meet His people looking for answers. So many are looking for God’s love and have no way of knowing how, or where to find it. God’s love is not found in the promises of this world. Love is not found in the latest version of a cell phone, computer, or big screen TV. God’s love is not found in the latest book of self help, fortune tellers, or financial experts. God’s love is not found in cheaper gasoline, lower taxes, or promises of a health care system. God’s love is found in prayer, His word, in serving others. God’s love is found in the simple acts of sacrifice. Encouraging others. Praising a child for their efforts. Loving my family. God’s love flows through me to others in everyday actions. It has to be a natural act of kindness. I am only a vessel for God’s love, His message to the world.

(Isaiah 52:12 KJV) For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your reward.

Too many people are sitting on the fence of spirituality waiting for a time of trouble before making a decision. I know, I have seen this, and I am praying…will they see? Will they make a decision before it is too late. Will Satan win by attracting them with promises of this world they can not refuse? God never intended for His message to be withheld until a moment before His return? The trials of Egypt were told to Abraham. God warned of Jerusalem’s fall long before the armies of Babylon appeared. Why would God withhold His message now, when there are people who need it today? God has gone ahead to prepare His people for His message. God has told the world of His plan of salvation, the life and sacrifice of Jesus long before He was born in this world. God announced Jesus’ arrival with angels singing in the heavens. God has prepared hearts for the message He has trusted me to deliver.

(Isaiah 52:13 KJV) Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor your ways My ways, says Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and does not return there, but waters the earth, and makes it bring out and bud, and give seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so shall My Word be, which goes out of My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall certainly do what I sent it to do. (1 Corinthians 15:58 KJV) (Isaiah 55:8-11 MKJV)

(Isaiah 52:14 KJV) As many were astounded at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

Jesus gave so much. Jesus gave all. He left the courts of Heaven with all the joy and love, more than I could ever imagine, to come here, live a life of poverty, trial, and disappointment, to die on a cross, whipped, beaten, spat upon, mocked, and forgotten. His disappointment was more than anyone could bear. His suffering more than I can imagine. Through it all, He never took His eyes off His Father, and the promise God will accept His sacrifice. The sacrifice that brings forgiveness of all sins.

(Isaiah 52:15 KJV) So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

God’s plan is beyond my imagination. I trust God has prepared His people for the message they have never heard, the salvation they have always considered in their hearts. Salvation that calls out from the heart of every person who has ever lived. No one can deny its calling. Consider the choice. Salvation and eternal life, or the world. If people understand eternal life, the choice will become clear. No more pain, no more sorrow. Eternal love, peace, and joy.

He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces. And He shall take away from all the earth the rebuke of His people. For Jehovah has spoken. And one shall say in that day, Lo, this is our God. We have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is Jehovah; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation. And God will wipe away all tears from their eyes. And there will be no more death, nor mourning, nor crying out, nor will there be any more pain; for the first things passed away. And He sitting on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said to me, Write, for these words are true and faithful. (Isaiah 25:8-9 MKJV) (Revelation 21:4-5 MKJV)

Matthew 8:16-17: Jesus Heals

Matthew 8:16-17 MKJV And evening coming on, they brought to Him many who had been possessed with demons. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick (17) so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “He took on Himself our weaknesses and bore our sicknesses.”

There was a small, quite knock at the door almost as soon as Jesus finished dinner with Peter. Opening the door Peter viewed a small boy with a mangy little dog sitting quietly next to him. The boy spoke right up, “I saw Jesus come here. I thought, well maybe, could I ask, do you think Jesus could heal my dog?” Peter looked down at the small boy as a smile spread over Jesus’ face. Peter questioned, “what is wrong with the dog?” To demonstrate the boy took a few steps back and called the dog, “come on boy.” The dog turned and limped toward the boy’s side, sitting down next to him. Peter could see the dog was born with an odd shaped leg which did not grow correctly in the womb. Peter remained speechless as Jesus made His way to the door. As Jesus approached the dog and went down on one knee the dog instinctively moved toward Him, sitting down in front of Him. Jesus scratched the dog under the chin, stroked his back a few times, and said to the boy, “call your dog now.” The boy shouted, “here boy,” in a voice exhibiting his faith in Jesus. The dog turned in a snap, and rushed to the boy, circling and barking. Jesus stood up and smiled, as an outward expression of the joy in His heart. Peter placed his hand on Jesus’ shoulder saying, “even the dogs bark praises to the Son of God.” The boy shouted, “thank you Jesus, praise the Lord,” as He stood in the doorway with Peter. They both took a moment to take in the scene as the boy ran down the street with his dog.

It did not take long before the entire town heard the boy’s shouts of praise. Seeing the once crippled dog, neighbors began asking questions. The young boy pointed them right to where Jesus was staying, Peter’s house. Soon a long trail of people stretched from one end of the street to the other.

Jesus moved among the crowd listening to calls for help and praises. Many people wanted to touch Him, some to be healed, and others out of curiosity. Jesus made His way to the back of Peter’s house and headed to the shore line. The crowd followed after Him. Setting Himself on the stem of a small fishing boat, the Son of God prepared to meet the sick and demon possessed.

One after another they presented themselves to Jesus. Some on their own, others helped, or carried by friends and relatives. A father was struggling to bring his grown son kicking and screaming. Fits of rage became more violent the moment Jesus came into view. Jesus spoke one word, “depart,” and the man instantly calmed.

Jesus noticed a skinny young woman moving about the crowd. Rising from the boat Jesus moved close enough to hear her encouraging everyone near her. “Don’t worry, Jesus is right here, He will help you soon. I am sure He will take the time to heal all of us. Have you seen all the people Jesus healed?” The young woman seemed determined to comfort everyone around her. Suddenly an old man crouched over by age and years of labor appeared in front of her and said, “I am hungry.” Reaching inside of her wrap, she pulled out a piece of bread, handing it to him with a smile. She also offered the old man a drink of water from the sheep skin she was carrying.

After the old man thanked her, she turned around to see who to minister to next. She had not noticed Jesus was standing nearby, observing her. Jesus was so close she bumped right into Him. “Oh excuse me sir,” she begged. To cushion the impact Jesus raised His hands to her shoulders. At such a close distance, Jesus could not help but notice a large lump on the side of her neck. Filled with compassion Jesus kissed her on the cheek. The precious moment was over in a second as others pressed in to attract Jesus’ attention. The young woman instinctively raised her hand to feel the cheek Jesus kissed. Her hand slid down her cheek to her neck. The lump and pain were gone! She put the sheep skin to her lips to take a drink, For the first time since she could remember, it didn’t hurt to swallow. She tested it again. No more pain. She too was healed.

Matthew 4:11-12: John the Baptist in prison.

Mat 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Mat 4:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;

After years of dedication and spiritual preparation under the most humbling conditions, John’s ministry was short lived. Immediately after fulfilling his mission to baptize Jesus, John lost his freedom.

We do not know exactly how long John wasted away in Herod’s prison, but based on John’s question sent to Jesus from prison, we can see how some of the scriptures may have encouraged John during those dark days.

And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. (8) He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. (9) And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.Isaiah 25:7-9.

Isaiah 29:18-24 (18) And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. (19) The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (20) For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off: (21) That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. (22) Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. (23) But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. (24) They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

As dedicated as John was to God, he was not able to witness Jesus’ ministry. If he had, doubts would have never entered his mind. During his life John had grown accustom to viewing the vast horizon, smells of the open field, and sounds of nature all around him. Now all John had was a small dark prison cell. As the dark walls closed in on John, questions pressed hard on his heart. He longed to see the works of the Messiah.

Confined to a prison cell, John had no choice but to send his followers to find out if Jesus was the Messiah promised in the scriptures.

Luke 7:17-23 MKJV And this report of Him went out in all Judea, and in all the neighborhood. (18) And his disciples reported all these things to John. (19) And John, calling near a certain two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, Are You He that should come, or do we look for another? (20) And coming to Him, the men said, John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, Are You He who should come, or do we look for another? (21) And in the same hour He cured many of infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits. And He gave sight to many who were blind. (22) And answering, Jesus said to them, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is proclaimed to the poor. (23) And blessed is he who shall not be offended in Me.

Jesus knew the words that would comfort John in his hour of need. This was a connection between the two established by the Holy Spirit. This is an illustration of the connecting power of the Holy Spirit. Distance did not diminish the power of the Spirit. Neither did conditions. John’s prayers, and the desire of his heart were known, understood by the Spirit, and met by Jesus.

Jesus had a great love and respect for John. Jesus understood John’s role in His ministry, and the sacrifices John endured to fulfill his mission. Jesus knew the scriptures describing John and the work he was chosen to perform.

Matthew 11:7-15 MKJV And as they departed, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? (8) But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, they who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. (9) But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet. (10) For this is the one of whom it is written, “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You.” (11) Truly I say to you, Among those who have been born of women there has not risen a greater one than John the Baptist. But the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he. (12) And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of Heaven is taken by violence, and the violent take it by force. (13) For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. (14) And if you will receive it, this is Elijah who is to come. (15) He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

John was not the only person Jesus praised. Jesus also praised the woman with the two mites, Mary when she bathed Jesus’ feet with perfume and anointed His head, Zacchaeus, and many others. Jesus understood the importance of praise. Imagine being trusted and praised by the King of the universe. These are only two of the unlimited forms of infinite love Jesus offers to us.

Matthew 8:14-15: Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother in law

Matthew 8:14-15 MKJV And when Jesus had come into Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother laid out and in a fever. (15) And He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them.

Peter was so excited that Jesus was coming to his house for dinner. Walking along side Peter, Jesus relished the thought of walking with a friend. Jesus sensed Peter’s excitement in the tone of his voice as he described his family. Jesus was thankful for the light conversation as He looked forward to a relaxing evening away from the rigors of ministry.

As they walked together by the side of the street Jesus observed the everyday routine of the people they passed. Women weaving baskets, mixing dough, cooking bread, children playing, and the carpenter with his son working their trade, which reminded Jesus of days spent helping His father.

As they approached Peter’s home, he quickened his pace a bit so he could proudly announce the arrival of their honored guest. Peter stuck his head in the doorway, then quickly disappeared inside. From the doorway Peter could see his wife’s mother lying in bed, her daughter kneeling next to her. Peter asked, “what’s wrong?” His wife replied, “mother fell sick to a fever today which has gotten worse, much worse.” Peter placed the palm of his hand on his mother in law’s cheek, then forehead, asking, “has she eaten anything yet?” His wife answered, “not a thing, we tried but she cannot keep anything down.” Peter took the towel from the bowl of water, wrung it out, and gently patted the moist towel on her forehead and cheeks. His wife sighed, “what are we going to do?” Answering his wife Peter said, “I don’t know.”

Jesus stood patiently at the doorway observing the scene while listening to the conversation, softly knocking on the door post to attract attention. The sight of his mother in law made Peter forget all about Jesus. Turning his head to the door Peter asked Jesus into his home. Jesus didn’t say a word. He quietly walked to the side on the bed, placed His hand on hers, as He communicated a silent request to His Father. As soon as He finished, she turned her hand upward, grasping Jesus’ hand. Jesus helped her up to her feet. She looked down at Peter and his wife, still kneeling on the floor and said, “is this how you treat guests? Are you going to introduce me? Why didn’t you wake me from my nap so I could have prepared a proper meal if you knew you were having a guest for dinner?” Walking to the kitchen she began preparing the evening meal. Peter and his wife, still kneeling at the bed, looked up at Jesus, their mouths wide open in an expression of astonishment. Jesus simply smiled back at them.

Matthew 3:13-17: Jesus is Baptized

Matthew 3:13-17 Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him. (14) But John restrained Him, saying, I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me? (15) And answering Jesus said to him, Allow it now, for it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed Him. (16) And Jesus, when He had been baptized, went up immediately out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him. (17) And lo, a voice from Heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

As Jesus approached the Jordan river, He paused for a moment along the road. Slowly His eyes gazed over the landscape taking in details of its simple beauty. Stately trees with leaves of jade, nourished with the reliable waters of the Jordan. Grass slowly swaying in the breeze. Flowers of purple, red, and blue adding a distinct contrast to the carpet of green. A butterfly fluttering from flower to flower, seeking nectar while carrying the next generation of pollen along its slender body. The vivid colors singing out praises to God as it unfolds it wings which had just been folded in prayer. Jesus thought of how vulnerable such a tender creator is. So small, colorful and defenseless. Jesus smiled as He pondered the message the butterfly spoke to Him. He knew the life of the butterfly reflected His own. Although surrounded by others, He would be alone. His life like the colors of the butterfly could not help but attract attention. His life, like that of the butterfly was totally reliant upon God for protection. Jesus knew this was His last chance to stand alone in His thoughts during the light of day. Jesus knew His next steps would change His life, and the world forever.

As He approached the side of a hill Jesus took a deep breath, and spoke in His normal tone of voice, “Father I am ready,” . As He came up over the brink, He paused again. This time His eyes fastened upon another display of colors, those worn by a group of priests sent to gather information about a strange man with even stranger actions and words. To many this man was simpley known as John the Baptist.

The priests in their stately robes were gathered to His left, while people from all walks of life waited patiently on His right. In the middle, about fifteen or twenty paces out in the river stood John with a small group of men helping people in and out of the water. Jesus turned to His right, walked down the hill, and quietly waited in line with the others listening to their comments as John spoke in a load, clear voice about repentance, water, the Holy Ghost, and fire. People around Him asked one another, “is this the Messiah? Is this the one the scriptures tell about? Are we about to be freed from bondage and oppression?”

One by one the people filed into the water, accepted baptism from John, and come out praising God, giving thanks for new hope in their lives. As Jesus began to enter the water a look of awe fell upon John’s face. He pointed and declared, ” behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.” John 1:29.

John struggled against the weight of the water as he tried to run to Jesus. As he reached Him, John kneeled before Him, grasping Jesus’ waist and said, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” Jesus answered, “Allow it now, for it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness.”

John stood up and turned around as Jesus began walking to deeper water. They walk in an embrace with each placing his arm on the others shoulder. As they paused, the clouds began to separate. Jesus stood in the water with His right shoulder against John’s chest, both His hands grasping John’s right hand as John’s left hand was across Jesus’ back. John let Jesus into the water back first. As Jesus came up out of the water, “the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him. And lo, a voice from Heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Why was Jesus’ baptism by John part of God’s plan? If you think of it, Jesus, the Son of God was baptized by a human. What does John’s miraculous birth and education by God have to do with Jesus’ baptism?

Matthew Chapter 5-6-7: Marriage and A Relationship with God

Jesus’ sermon on the mountain is a list of instructions showing how to maintain a proper marriage relationship between a husband and wife. His sermon also illustrates the type of relationship God offers to His followers.

Mat 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

A bushel is used for everyday labor. Work can often interfere with the love a marriage could experience. Care needs to be taken so outside influences do not suppress love within the home because marriage is God’s light to the world. It is not easily hid, or meant to be kept behind closed doors. The peace, joy, and happiness of a marriage under God is meant to be shared with the world, as an example of the relationship God desires to share with His people. Let us be glad and rejoice and we will give glory to Him. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has prepared herself. (Revelation 19:7 MKJV)

God’s word is a light upon my path of life. Every time I open God’s word, His Spirit leads me to a new and deeper understanding of His love for me, His love for the world. How can I restrain God’s word, or His love. I have to share each with the world. The entrance of Your Words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. (Psalms 119:130 MKJV)

Matthew 5:19 MKJV Therefore whoever shall relax one of these commandments, the least, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven. But whoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.

God’s law is to be honored in the home, there should be no compromise. One compromise leads to another, each drawing you away from God. Soon the marriage is between only two because God has been ignored, and removed from the relationship. Then two become one, the least in Heaven. Keeping the law draws the entire family to God and Heaven. Therefore you shall lay up these my words in your hearts and in your souls, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, so that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 11:18-19 MKJV

God does not compromise. He does not say, this command is excused for one person, or that law another. God never changes. One sin created chaos in this world where soon every sin was broken, a process that continues today. Thinking, or teaching a sin can be ignored, or forgotten is turning your back on God, and denying His authority. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Hebrews 13:8 KJV)

Matthew 5:24 KJV Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

Marriage problems can cause a distraction. Solve problems in the home before offering your gift to God. Ministries outside the home can not be neglected, but your performance is much more effective when problems in the home are first resolved in a Christ like manner. Burdens are to be lifted up to God. Trust that God will provide a solution. Place all your burdens upon Jesus. But to every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. (Ephesians 4:7 MKJV)

God can not accept a gift when ill feelings rule the heart. Forgiveness is the key to drawing closer to God. Forgiveness must first be given and received, afterwards God with honor the cheerful giver. He honors people who have already given all they have to their fellow man. Jesus is our example of forgiveness. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. (Psalms 51:17 MKJV)

Matthew 5:27-30 MKJV You have heard that it was said to the ancients, “You shall not commit adultery.” (28) But I say to you that whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (29) And if your right eye offends you, pluck it out and throw it from you. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be thrown into hell. (30) And if your right hand offends you, cut it off and throw it from you. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be thrown into hell.

To look at another woman is wrong. It is better to pluck out your eye. To touch another woman is also a sin. It is better to cut off your hand. Do not let the devil tempt you with adultery. Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does it destroys his own soul. (Proverbs 6:32 MKJV)

To look upon any object or mystical power as a god is the worst form of adultery. It is being unfaithful to your relationship with God. Adultery breaks the heart of the innocent party like no other sin is able to accomplish. Spiritual adultery breaks the heart of God. For you shall worship no other god. For Jehovah, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God; Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know; and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? Exodus 34:14-15, Jeremiah 7:9-10 MKJV.

Matthew 5:31-32 MKJV It was also said, Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce. (32) But I say to you that whoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever shall marry her who is put away commits adultery.

Therefore they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate. (Matthew 19:6 MKJV) This is God’s way of saying, He hates divorce. Adultery in the marriage is adultery against God. You can not put away your wife any more than you can put away God. No matter what, the guilty party can never find relief from the guilt and shame of adultery. Leaving the spouse and marrying the partner in adultery does not forgive the sin.

Would God turn His back on a person committing spiritual adultery with objects of greed, habits of lust, or worship given to demons? Forgiveness is only found by returning to God with an honest and open heart. Let your way of life be without the love of money, and be content with such things as you have, for He has said, “Not at all will I leave you, not at all will I forsake you, never!” (Hebrews 13:5 MKJV)

Matthew 5:33-37 KJV Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: (34) But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: (35) Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. (36) Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. (37) But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Marriage vows are not to be taken lightly. They are a life long commitment made before God, family and friends. Let your yes be forever, do not waiver.

Never waiver with your relationship with God. Stand strong by your commitment, Do not think you were reborn to remain an infant for your entire spiritual life. But grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18 MKJV.

Matthew 5:39 MKJV But I say to you, Do not resist evil. But whoever shall strike you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

When your marriage partner hurts you, forgive, immediately and unconditionally. Do not take a minor offense and turn it into a major problem, but let them know when you have been offended before it happens again and becomes a habit. Forgive and resolve matters quickly.

Our relationship with others is an example of our relationship with God. The example we set is a reflection of the impact He has on our lives. So likewise shall My heavenly Father do also to you, unless each one of you from your hearts forgive his brother their trespasses. Matthew 18:35 MKJV.

Matthew 5:40-42 KJV And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. (41) And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. (42) Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Charity begins in the home. Sharing and giving of yourself, time, and all you have begins in the home. If selfish habits are practiced in the marriage, they will manifest themselves throughout your entire life. Give to those you love, develop charitable habits within the family. Let the husband give to the wife proper kindness, and likewise the wife also to the husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. And likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife. 1 Corinthians 7:3-4 MKJV.

The Lord loves a cheerful giver. Share the blessings God has freely given to you. God desires that you give more than what is asked of you. The example you set may not be evident at the time, but may one day find a place in the heart when it begins to soften. And some fell on the good ground and yielded fruit, indeed one a hundredfold, and one sixty, and one thirty. Matthew 13:8 MKJV.

Matthew 5:48 KJV Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Is it possible to have the perfect marriage? Is it possible for two people to agree an everything all the time? But Jesus looked on them and said to them, With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26 MKJV.

God desires to have the perfect relationship with you. He is willing to forgive mistakes, as long as the heart repents. Always remember one thing, God tells us, “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor your ways My ways, says Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 MKJV. God understands the level you are at. He knows your thoughts, and knows how hard you try to be just like HIM.

Matthew 6:14-15 KJV For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: (15) But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

You must always forgive your marriage partner. Never let a matter build up inside. You have to learn to forgive, and ask for forgiveness. If you allow little things to build up, they will reach a point of controlling you. They will eat away with you until you allow them to separate yourself from your partner and from God. You will be on your own doing things you once would have never considered.

Colossians 3:12-14 MKJV (12) Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender feelings of mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering, (13) forbearing one another and forgiving yourselves, if anyone has a complaint against any. As Christ forgave you, so also you do. (14) And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.

Jesus died for the sins of the world, and offers forgiveness to all who call upon His name. Following His example, God wants people to forgive one another. What happens when you do not forgive? The Spirit will try and convict you of your sins. Satan will try to convince you they were justified. A battle begins to war inside of you. If you give into Satan, he convinces you the conviction is caused by the one you hurt, so you try to hurt them more in an attempt to make the pain will go away. It increases with every effort. Forgiveness is the only remedy. For You, Lord, are good and ready to forgive, and rich in mercy to all those who call on You. Psalms 86:5 MKJV.

Matthew 6:19-21 KJV Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: (20) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: (21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

This is an important part of a successful marriage. Never allow the desire of material things to over power love. Love is a gift from Heaven. Displaying the love of a marriage to others can play a role in leading others to Christ. It is an illustration of our relationship with God. Be mindful of things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. When Christ our Life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:2-4 MKJV)

The most important treasure in Heaven is you, your family, and all those God has put in your path to plant His seeds. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And everything, whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. (Colossians 3:16-17 MKJV)

Matthew 6:28-30 KJV And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: (29) And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. (30) Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

The robe of salvation and garments of righteousness are gifts from Christ. They are the clothing of Heaven. Like salvation God cloths the field in a manner no man can duplicate or imitate. Salvation is an attraction everyone can see, but only understood when given time to appreciate. I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah, my soul will be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the robes of salvation, He covered me with the robe of righteousness like a bridegroom adorns himself with ornaments, and like a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10 MKJV) There is no other source of salvation outside of a relationship with Jesus.

Matthew 7:1-2 KJV Judge not, that ye be not judged. (2) For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Never judge one another in a marriage. Judgment breeds envy, mistrust, and in the end hatred. Judge not, but take your concerns to God in prayer. Ask Jesus to judge your disagreements. Pray on them together. Put them away for a time and wait for the Sprit to work. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as is becoming in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter against them. Colossians 3:18-19 MKJV.

God does not want to judge you, He wants to forgive you, and take you home. Judging others is like trying to take God’s place. You will never understand the standards God uses to judge while you are here on earth. We can not judge God’s standards based on those we experience in this life. But why do you judge your brother? Or also why do you despise your brother? For all shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each one of us will give account concerning himself to God. Then let us not judge one another any more, but rather judge this, not to put a stumbling-block or an offense toward his brother. (Romans 14:10-13 MKJV)

Matthew 7:3-5 KJV And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? (4) Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? (5) Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Neither partner in a marriage is perfect. Both need God’s help to maintain a proper relationship. Both have to understand, the other is not perfect. Pray for Jesus to change you and He will see to your needs. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you also are called in one body, and be thankful. Colossians 3:15 MKJV.

Only Jesus knows how to change lives. What needs to change, how, when to change it and when you are ready to apply the lesson to your life. In your relationship with Jesus, pray that He will change your life, and open your eyes to the things you need to change, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height, and to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, that you might be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:16-19 MKJV)

Matthew 7:7-8 KJV Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: (8) For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

God is more than willing to give you wisdom and love to make a marriage grow and flourish, to change a willing heart into a loving heart, to bind two people together in a loving relationship with Jesus as the head. But that you, speaking the truth in love, may in all things grow up to Him who is the Head, even Christ; (Ephesians 4:15 MKJV)

What God really wants is an open and honest relationship with you. To give and receive love. An open heart willing to learn and give. Someone God can shape into His perfect image of love and understanding. Jehovah has appeared to me from afar, saying, Yea, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness I have drawn you. (Jeremiah 31:3 MKJV)

Mat 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Our love will never be enough, we need to pray for Jesus’ love to flow through us to our partners. With Jesus as the head of the household, every need will be met, ever problem will fade away, peace and joy will fill the home. Love will abound to overflowing. Father, I desire that those whom You have given Me, that they may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me, for You have loved Me before the foundation of the world. (John 17:24 MKJV)

Jesus offers the best gifts of all, salvation, everlasting life, and infinite love. Ask HIM. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. And I give to them eternal life, and they shall never ever perish, and not anyone shall pluck them out of My hand. (Mark 10:45 MKJV. John 10:28 MKJV)

Mat 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

Matthew 8:5-13: Jesus and the Centurion

Matthew 8:5-13 KJV And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, (6) And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. (7) And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. (8) The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. (9) For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. (10) When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. (11) And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. (12) But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (13) And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Riding home after a long week of military maneuvers under the relenting middle eastern sun and cold lonely nights, Marcus lingered for a moment to experience the scene before him. He marveled at the sight of the setting sun which seemed to pause, resting upon the horizon. His first thought was the fact he was glad it was going down, as he looked forward to the coolness of the night. Slowly his mind drifted to the wonders of the world and the sun that rose every morning, and its setting every evening. He admired the perfect form, and the vivid colors highlighted by the red hue of the setting sun, Marcus let out a deep soothing sigh as he thought of being in the arms of his wife, and the greeting he was about to receive from his son. It’s been the same routine every time he returned home, buy also one that he would not give up for anything.

Riding up to the stable Marcus dismounted, wondering why Lucas was not there to greet him. Assuming Lucas had more important business to attend to, Marcus tied his horse to the fence post, and headed for the house looking forward to a quick bath, then social activities and company of the evening meal. Opening the door Marcus was not met by the usual happy smile and embrace of his wife, or the excited greeting of his son. Instead his ears heard the sound of weeping. Marcus walked in. As he turned the corner, he saw the family and a few servants gathered around his son’s bed. Looking up, his wife Anna, leaped forward, wrapping her arms around him for comfort. Marcus felt her tears upon his neck and shoulder. Looking at the bed he saw Lucas lying there. With both arms Marcus gently held his wife to one side so he could make his way to the bed. Kneeling, he put the back of his hand on Lucius’ forehead asking, “what’s wrong?” Anna informed him of the days events. “About noon time Lucas suddenly fainted. We tried to revive him. I thought it was heat stroke, so we placed wet towels on his forehead and tried to get him to drink. There was no response, so we carried him in and placed him on Cato’s bed.” Marcus inquired, “have you called the doctor?” Anna replied, “yes.” Handing Marcus a small clay bottle she continued, “he provided this to administer to him, but we cannot get him to do so mush as drink.” Taking the bottle Marcus gave it a sniff. Not that smelling it would reveal anything, but give the impression he was actively pursuing a resolution. At this point Marcus’ anticipated homecoming turned into a time of grief and reflection.

Marcus never looked at Lucas as a servant. Years ago Lucas was purchased as a slave by Marcus’ father. His dedicated service and sincere concern for the family quickly gained him his freedom. When Marcus was transferred to serve Rome in Judea, his father asked Lucas to accompany his son. Realizing this was a sign of trust and respect, Lucas accepted the awesome responsibility. Thus Lucas was more than a dedicated and free servant, he was in fact a father figure for Marcus.

Dinner was a solemn experience. Conversation centered around Lucas and ideas of what to do about the situation. After commanding a legion all week, Marcus felt unsure, bewildered, and powerless. He tried his best to give the impression he was still in control of the situation, and everything would turn out fine. However, doubts filled his mind and heart like an enemy who had been planning his demise for years.

The heat of the day captured within the house did not escape into the darkness of the night. Worries of Lucas kept Marcus awake. Anna sensed Marcus’ concern. Turning along side of him, she placed a hand on his chest. Her intuition told her to wait a moment. Before speaking, Marcus’ mind must first grow to realize, she was there to comfort him. When she heard Marcus’ sigh, she knew he was ready to listen. “Are you still thinking about Lucas?” Marcus sighed, “yes.” Anna whispered so not to wake anyone, “we have done all we could for him.” Marcus whispered back, “there must be something we can do, I cannot lie down here and do nothing.” In the silence of the night Anna drew circles along Marcus’ chest, then placed her hand flat upon it. Feeling the pattern of his deep silent breathing and pace of his heart, she felt her husband’s concern. Finally she added, “you know there is one thing. You may not believe this, but the other day a man visited. He claimed he was a leper, and was healed. The way he was dressed, I believed his story. It was so touching. I gave him a change of clothes to go along with his change of life and heart.” Anna paused a moment, waiting for a response. Receiving none she continued with her story. “The man claims he was healed by a man named Jesus.” Marcus chimed in, “I have heard of Him. He is one of the reasons for the increased activity, my longer hours, and our heightened state of alert.” Anna viewed this as a typical response based on his position and responsibility. She continued. “Some claim this man Jesus is a prophet with the ability to heal.” Marcus responded, “I am familiar with the stories. That is one reason for the governor’s concern.” Anna asked, “do you think they are true?” Marcus answered in a bewildered tone, “reports would indicate yes, the stories are true.” Anna could sense a questioning faith by the tone in his voice. She asked, “should we find out if these stories are true? If they are, could this Jesus help Lucas?”

Worry robbed Marcus of sleep that night. Rising early he walked to the door in time to watch the sun rise, his thoughts immersed in the stillness of the morning, and the beauty of the scene. The sun cast a multitude of red, pink, orange and yellow highlights upon the contour of the clouds. The sky transcended the talent of every artist, changing from the deepest purple in the west to the brightest blue in the east, highlighted by a yellow horizon, and the blazing red of the rising sun. The scene painted a glimmer of hope in Marcus’ heart.

Calling his servants together he inquired if anyone had any information about this mysterious man Jesus. Much to his surprise, almost all his servants shared a story of his teaching, and the miracles He performed. Marcus asked if anyone knew where to find Him. He received as many stories on where Jesus had been, and where He was going, as those concerning His miracles. Marcus gave his servants instructions to find this Jesus, and beg Him to come to the aid of Lucas. He reminded them of the contributions he had made in building the local synagogue. He dispatched his servants in teams of two, and sent them off in three directions. Marcus decided to travel to Capernaum himself, based on updated reports he had been given yesterday.

Upon entering Capernaum, Marcus first visited the synagogue he helped finance, donating the funds in the names of his servants. After he was warmly greeted by a number of elders, and asking them for help he explained the situation. After learning of Lucas’ condition, which melted away the prejudice they held towards Jesus, the elders were more than happy to help. They informed Marcus of the latest reports received about Jesus, indicating He was on his way to Capernaum. Marcus divided the elders into small groups, assigning each to the main roads leading into Capernaum. Marcus would wait at the synagogue to receive reports.

The instant one group of elders reached the edge of the city, they saw a large group traveling along the road. As soon as they confirmed Jesus was leading the group, the elders sent a messenger to Marcus. The elders waited for Jesus to enter the city, and sought an audience with Him. Sensing their need, Jesus granted their request.

The scene seemed rather odd, considering the back ground of the characters. A few hours before, these Jewish elders were actively seeking faults in Jesus, but now they were seeking His favor. Even more strange was the fact, they hed relayed the request of a Roman centurion. When Marcus arrived, the three groups were not only represented, but working together to save one person. Only God could bring these three, Jesus, Jewish elders, and a Roman centurion together under a common cause. When people are facing a trial it creates a situation for God to show His wondrous powers.

Jesus’ heart, always filled with love, may have reached an even higher level when viewing the scene of cooperation between the Jewish elders and a Roman centurion. In this miracle He recognized the work of His Father.

After listening to the elders praising Marcus, Jesus waited for his request. Finally Marcus spoke up. “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, Go! And he goes; and to another, Come! And he comes; and to my servant, Do this! And he does it.”

Jesus paused for a moment while silently praying that the elders understood the message Marcus had just delivered. It was a message and claim they would not receive if Jesus had offered it.

Finally Jesus answered Marcus’ request. “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven. But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said to the centurion, Go. And as you have believed, so let it be to you.”

As quickly as Lucas fell sick, he recovered. The moment Jesus spoke His blessing, Lucas opened his eyes, sat up in bed asking for something to drink. Instantly the servants who had gathered around his bed began rejoicing, praising God, and the name of Jesus. Tears filled Anna’s eyes as she joined in, praising Jesus, and dedicating her life to learning more about this mysterious man she had heard so much about.

Death of my DAD

My dad had turned his back on God for as long as I knew him, all my life. He never talked about it in detail, but made short mention of one thing. He said he could never believe in God based on what he had seen in W.W.II.

For a couple of months my dad’s health had been failing. He was simply dying of old age. His body was giving up, breaking down, wasting away. His weight dropped from 180 pounds to less than 100 (81 to 45 kilos) within a few months. During his last weeks my wife and I had to do everything for him. He could hardly get out of bed, much less walk under his own power. My wife and I prayed about bringing him to Jesus. We both tried striking up a conversation time and again. Nothing seemed to reach him. What did he see during the war that effected him so badly he was willing to give up eternal life rather than forgive and forget?

Finally my wife and I agreed to talk to the pastor. He agreed to visit my dad.

When the pastor arrived we brought him up to date. We prayed and he went into the room alone with my dad. A half hour passed, an hour, an hour and a half. We questioned whether or not this was a good sign. Finally the pastor came out of the room with the biggest smile on his face I had ever seen. He simply said, “your father just accepted Jesus.”

My wife and I went into his room. By this time we are also smiling, along with my dad. He simply told us, he was finished with turning his back on God, and he now knows Jesus has forgiven his sins, and he was looking forward to Heaven.

Two days later my dad died.

Years later it was the 50th anniversary of the end of W.W.II. I was watching a documentary on W.W.II. At the beginning they explained the original films used in the story were sealed for 50 years because they were so graphic the government feared that if they were shown after the war, people would rise up to seek revenge on Germany, and German citizens.

The documentary showed footage of actual German film recorded during the operation of the concentration camps. Included were actual films recorded when the Americans liberated some of the camps. They showed the horrors of war few have seen. Thousands of dead naked bodies of men and women who had been worked and starved to death. Huge mounds of broken and twisted bodies reduced to only skin and bones.

My dad was a member of the 8th Armor Division, responsible for liberating four of the concentration camps. Was this the scene that effected my father all the remaining years of his life?

Some people turn their backs on God because of little petty disputes. Others never take the time to notice, and consider God’s creation, evidence of His existence. Many never take the time to read and study His word, to learn the overwhelming proof, only God could have written the Bible. Some have never experienced the love of Jesus. No matter what their reason, if God is able to reach my dad in an enclosed room, body wasting away much like those he had witnessed at the end of the war, and turn his heart to Jesus, God is able to reach anyone willing to open their heart.

Loss of my Mother and how God saved me

When I was about 5 or 6 years old my mother began to complain about back pain. She went to a number of doctors, none of them seemed to be able to identify the cause. Years before she had surgery for breast cancer, but all the doctors insisted there was no connection.

Finally she decided to see a chiropractor, who had to wait a few months before it would be safe to take another x-ray. The doctors had taken so many x-rays, they must have reached the recommended level of safety without having found a cause of the pain. When it was finally safe to take another x-ray I accompanied my mother back to the chiropractor’s office.

We sat in the waiting room while the slide was developed. I was surprised when the chiropractor asked me to step into the back with him. Being a kid, I felt like it was some sort of adventure. He flicked on his light board, and slide the x-ray into place. It was the first x-ray I had ever seen and wanted to remember the moment. He asked me, do you see anything wrong with this picture? I thought is was a strange question, I also thought the slide looked strange. The chiropractor explained, “your mother has an advanced case of bone cancer.” I was not sure what that was, but the way he said it, I knew it was not good. He called my mother in, and told her the news, she had only a few more months to live. She kept a very calm, but stern look on her face. He prescribed a series of return visits to help ease the pain. My mother just stood at the receptionists desk with a hollow look on her face while the nurse filled out an appointment card, and handed it to her. She put it in her purse, turned and walked out the door.

My mother didn’t speak a word on the way home. She pulled into the garage, parked the car, got out and walked towards the house. For some reason our neighbor came out of her house, took one look at my mother, and walked directly towards her. When they were within speaking distance our neighbor asked, “what’s wrong?” The expression on my mother’s face changed in an instant. Tears filled her eyes and began running down her cheeks as she answered, “I have cancer, and I am going to die.”

In the following years I did everything I could for my mother. I rubbed her back with lotion to bring some relief to the pain. I brought her meals in bed, served on a small bed tray table. I also rode my bike to the store with a note and money to buy her cigarettes. Two packs of regular, and one pack of menthol. I was too young to know they were killing her.

After months of being bed ridden, my mom gathered up the strength to get herself out of bed, put on her make up, get dressed, and escort my dad to the military ball. They met before W.W.II. She had a lot of respect for my dad’s service during and after the war, as he served in the army reserves. This was a tribute to the love and respect my mother had for my dad.

Things went down hill from there. The weight loss was beyond comprehension. My mother dwindled to skin and bones. In the last weeks she could not walk. My dad and I had to carry her to the bathroom. I could not believe this could happen to anyone.

Reality finally hit me. One night my dad had a talk with me and my younger brother. One day after dinner he called us into the living room, and told us, our mother was going to die. It was not what I wanted to hear. I felt, if no one said it, it would not happen. I ran to my bedroom and cried.

At that time my mother began sleeping a lot. I would go into her room, kneel down, and pray. Since the doctors had given her only a few months to live, and she had made it over two years, I felt there was a chance for a full recovery. I asked God to keep her alive.

I can’t remember if I made any promises, or how I prayed. This was not one of the things I was taught in Sunday school. In my mind, God would hear my prayers and keep my mother alive because I loved her, and I would miss her if she were gone.

At that time I had almost no concept of death. At eight years old, living in the suburbs offered little if any contact with death. Why would a child think about death, or develop a concept about a subject they had no use for?

Just a few days before Christmas my dad came into the bedroom I shared with my little brother and woke me up. He told me, “your mother fell down, I need help to carry her back to bed.” We went into the living room where she was laying next to the Christmas tree. As we carried my mother back to the bedroom I noticed her breathing was shallow and labored. It did not seem natural. The next morning I laid in bed with the strongest feeling something was wrong. I tried to go back to sleep, praying whatever it was, I would wake up to find this strange feeling gone. After some time my dad came into our bedroom and told us, “your mother passed away during the night.” I ran into her room, fell on top of her, hugging her as I cried. She felt cold and stiff. I knew there was no life in her, and there was nothing I could do. My dad told me, “she must have gotten up in the night to see the Christmas tree you and your brother decorated. I think she wanted to make it through one more Christmas.”

The next few days or weeks were blocked from my memory. I don’t remember anyone coming over to the house. I don’t remember the Christmas the following day. I don’t remember anyone trying to comfort me, or talking to me. I do not remember the funeral. It is like every memory of those days was erased from my mind. It may have been based on the fact I kept telling myself none of it ever happened.

At that point I gave up all hope, faith, and belief in God. If God could not grant one prayer to save my mother’s life, how could he exist?

That was it. I turned my back on God. But God was not done with me. He never gave up on me. I spent the next sixteen years with no church, no prayers, no faith in God.

I always tried to do good, treat people fairly, and live a good life, with no thought of an after life. I saw all the proof I wanted to see. One day you are alive, the next you are dead. Nothing more, nothing less. I felt life was meant to live for the moment.

It is amazing how Satan seems to know when something will happen. For a time I dated a woman who was into witchcraft to a small degree. That lead to following the horoscope, some beliefs in supernatural powers, like the pyramids, and other such things. I was just getting into Tarot cards when something strange began to happen to my best friend.

We worked in our own body shop custom painting cars. We made our own hours and often worked from noon to way past midnight. He began bringing these religious tapes to work and listening to them. I found them most irritating. Then he began talking about the Sabbath and how the world was worshiping on the wrong day. He insisted the true Sabbath was on the seventh day.

After listening to him running off at the mouth, and those tapes played over and over again, day after day, week after week, I finally said, enough is enough. It was time to speak my peace. I told him, “everyone knows Sunday is the seventh day, not Saturday. I counted on my fingers, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday is the seventh day of the week. Why do you think they call it a weekend?” He insisted Saturday was the seventh day, and Sunday was the first day of the week. We argued back and forth for some time. Finally I asked him if he wanted to bet on it. We agreed, if Sunday was the seventh day on the calendar, Larry would have to stop listening to the tapes at work, and stop talking about all that religious stuff. If I was wrong, I would attend next weeks Bible study with him.

After we shook hands on the bet, we had to prove who was right, and who was wrong. We decided to look at the calendar in the office. The calendar on the wall clearly had Sunday as the first day of the week, and Saturday as the seventh. I swept over to the desk calendar. The same thing. I flung open the drawer to pull out a pocket calendar. Same result. I reached back, pulled out my wallet, fumbling through it to find a card sized calendar. Same result again.

I felt bewildered. How could I miss this all my life? I looked a calendar thousands of times. How could I have missed this?

In hind sight I can see how in a way, God had placed his hand over this simple fact my entire life. How can God do that? God created everything, even the molecules on the paper, and my eyes. God created my brain, and in His way, used it to hide a simple fact I should have easily noticed. God did all this because He knew exactly how to call me back.

When I went to the study, I walked in with a very poor attitude. I figured I was only there to settle a bet. I sat down at the kitchen table with a group of other people chit chatting about little religious matters. I wondered how long this was going to last as I checked my watch. A few minutes later a tall skinny guy wearing a shirt and tie came walking in all excited about something. He exclaimed, “I was so surprised when I found this during lunch. I jotted down some notes and ran off some copies.” He passed them out around the table. I looked at a list of scripture with a few words jotted down next to them. They prayed before beginning the study.

Someone took out a really big group while the teacher, Bill, asked everyone to open their Bibles to a text. I didn’t have a Bible, so the lady next to me offered to share. I pretended to look, just to be polite, but only glanced at the page, not reading anything. After they read the text, Bill asked the group what the key words were. They went around the group gathering a list of three words. Bill asked the person with the Concordance to look up one of the words, and choose a few verses to look up. One member after another read the texts they were asked to look up. Bill asked if they saw anything in the texts. Some of the texts identified what Bill referred to as the spiritual meaning of the key word. They did this for the second and third key words. After the texts were gathered, and the spiritual meaning for each key word was charted out, Bill rewrote the original text substituting the spiritual meaning for each key word. As he read the paraphrased text back my attention became focused on the study for the first time. I listen to the interpretation, leaned over to the Bible next to me to read the original text, amazed at how this had made the text so clear, so easy to understand.

Bill asked everyone to turn to the next text. I slide my chair over to get a better look at the Bible next to me. I looked at the text in the Bible as it was read, and had no idea what it meant. Once again the group identified the key words. The first word was located in the Concordance, a few texts were chosen to identify the spiritual meaning. This was repeated for the second word, I was beginning to think this was some kind of trick. Much to my surprise, Bill asked me to look up the third word in the Concordance. At first I was nervous, but quickly decided, this is giving me the chance to show they were playing some sort or trick. I was certain this was not going to work if I chose the texts.

I looked up the word, ran my finger down the row of texts, and randomly picked out four, with no thought behind what I was doing. The first verse read didn’t reveal anything. Neither did the second verse. I was thinking to myself, I was right, this is going to fail. The third and forth verse clearly identified something, but did it fit the original text? The spiritual meaning for the key words was written down. The verse was paraphrased with the spiritual meanings. As Bill read the paraphrased text I leaned over and read the original. He did it again. It made perfect sense, and was much easier to understand.

I was totally amazed. I had to admit, I did feel something different. I felt a lot different. Bill explained how God had written the Bible in a way anyone could interpret it. I knew this was true, I had just seen it explained twice, and one of the words I helped with.

I did feel different. I felt I had found something I did not know I was looking for. No, I found exactly what I was looking for, the meaning of life. I was looking for it in all the junk I had been reading. None of it provided any answers.

As I drove home a deep warm feeling entered my heart. I felt like a new man. I found a new life, a new purpose. When I arrived home, I went into the kitchen, grabbed a big green garbage bag, and began filling it with all the Tarot cards, horoscope and pyramid books, and all the other garbage I had. That very evening I took the bag out to the curb, and never looked back.

Since that day, thirty some years ago, God has put a number of people in my life to show me what I needed to learn at the time. I have learned a number of study methods, different ways of reaching people, and how to pray. My life has been a road of constant growth. It has its ups and downs with the path always leading up. My original Bible became like an old friend, one I could always turn to for answers. The friend I really turn to is Jesus. He has drawn me so close to Him, I can feel His presence every day. Since I have met God, He has always shown me, He is able to accomplish what seems impossible to me. Each study has shown only God could have written the Bible. Experiences in my life have shown me, God is always working on me, drawing me nearer to Him. I know God always has a plan for me. The first one took sixteen years. Since then, I have learned to listen to God’s voice, how He reaches me through His word, my prayers, and others, who follow God with all their hearts. God, our creator can do anything. God has done everything.

Men’s Fraternity meetings: Milwaukee Wisconsin

How does a man become a noble man of God, and where does he go for the answers?

What is the difference between a man and a woman? How do you celebrate the differences? How do you keep Satan from exploiting the differences?

Men need a safe place to share a clear vision of Biblical manhood.

Men need time with other men to process their thoughts, feelings, ideas and goals.

Men need to learn how to become a man. A sacred moment when they recognize when they have passed from boyhood to manhood, to say good-bye to childish things.

Men need other men to cheer them on.

Matthew 8:1-4: Jesus Heals a Leper

Matthew 8:1-4 MKJV When He had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. (2) And behold, a leper came and worshiped him, saying, Lord, if You will, You can make me clean. (3) And Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, I will; be clean! And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. (4) And Jesus said to him, See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest. And offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.

After Jesus finished His sermon on the mountain, teaching God’s commandments in the manner in which they were meant to be taught, the people praised His teaching saying, “He wasn’t like the teachers of the Law; instead, he taught with authority.(Matthew 7:29 GNB)

As Jesus made His way down from the steep mountain accompanied by a very large group of His followers touched by His message, they were met by small groups of people making their way up to hear Jesus speak. Jesus’ attention was drawn to a commotion in the distance. As He approached the scene the small crowd’s attention was drawn to Jesus. Immediately Jesus could feel something was wrong. The Spirit kept leading Jesus forward as some of the people in the crowd were attempting to redirect His path. Jesus gently moved aside one person after another until reaching the other side of the group where He found a man wrapped in rags and smelling of death. Clearly this man was a leper. Jesus instantly understood why some of the people tried to keep Him away. They did not understand His mission, power, or grace.

Keeping His distance, the leper immediately fell to his knees. Breaking into prayer the leper pleaded for mercy. “Son of David, I ask you for mercy from the most high and infinite God, Creator of all Heaven and earth. Lord, if You will, You can make me clean.

With compassion in His eyes, Jesus began to approach the leper. Mummers and gasps could be heard from the crowd as Jesus neared the broken and wasted man in front of Him. Some tried to cry out a warning to Jesus, but their voices were stopped by unseen angels gathered among the people. Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean!

Silence fell over the mountain side as the leper slumped down, Jesus’ hand still upon his shoulder. After a few seconds, still in a kneeling position the leper straightened up. Jesus put his hand under the lepers arm helping him up. Once standing, the leper began removing the rag wrapped about his head and face. There was no sign of leprosy. Jesus helped him unwrap his hands, which appeared as strong and fresh as any man’s hands. Upon examining his hands the leper raised them into the air in a sign of praise to God. Feeling renewed energy in his muscles and joints, he quickly moved about the crowd in a large circular pattern to share his joy with everyone in sight. Much to his surprise, the people still moved away from him much like they had before he was healed. They just could not believe what had happened before their eyes.

At the end of his circle he came face to face with Jesus, the only smiling face in sight. The two couldn’t help but embrace. Jesus whispered in his ear, “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest. And offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.” Upon hearing Jesus’ command, the newly created man turn and left.

Many authors have written about the leper. Most writers have put an emphasis on compiling a detailed list focusing on the medical aspect of leprosy. Others have loosely referenced Biblical terms concerning this illness. Unfortunately, most have neglected to reference the actual text, failing to give proper credit to the original Author and Healer. Some of the comments on the leper have pointed out the social pains and how they added to the physical pain. “And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean. All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.” KJV Leviticus 13:45-46.

Although aspects of this subject may be interesting, they fail to teach the spiritual lesson contained within this acted parable. By rule, any text illustrating a point or action beyond the normal physical laws of nature must contain a spiritual lesson. Before this text was written there were very few people healed from leprosy. The Bible makes it clear, this should have been received as a great miracle.

How do we unlock the spiritual lesson in the story of the leper Jesus healed? To unlock the spiritual meaning we first identify the key words. In this case the answer is elementary. The first key word identified is leper. The next step is to compare other texts containing the word leper. This leads us to Leviticus 14 which describes what appears to be a very strange ceremony. This is our second clue. Whenever God introduces a ceremony which may seem strange to most people it will of course contain a simple explanation, explained only by the word of God.

KJV Leviticus 14:2. This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: 3. And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;

KJV Leviticus 14: 13. And he shall slay the lamb in the place where he shall kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the holy place: for as the sin offering is the priest’s, so is the trespass offering: it is most holy: 14. And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:

KJV Leviticus 14: 17. And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the trespass offering: 18. And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the Lord. 19. And the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness; and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering: 20. And the priest shall offer the burnt offering and the meat offering upon the altar: and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

Anyone who has read through the Bible has read this ceremony before. This is the point in a study when the Holy Spirit begins to establish His presence. A faithful follower of God’s word will have a small voice within them, directing them to look further. A devout student of the word will find the missing piece of this puzzle by allowing the Spirit to lead, dedicating a little time to conduct a simple search.

Common sense will indicate, there is something strange about putting blood on the right ear, thumb and big toe. It should be obvious, these are key words demanding additional study. A simple search will reveal a similar ceremony recorded in Exodus.

KJV Exodus 29: 1. And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest’s office: take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,

KJV Exodus 29:19. And thou shalt take the other ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram. 20. Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.

This should now make perfect sense. A diligent search has revealed one spiritual meaning behind Jesus’ healing of the leper. When this leper presented himself before the priests, they knew they had to perform a ceremony. Most likely they have never performed this ceremony. When was the last time a leper had been healed? They had no choice but to look to the scriptures for the answer. Point number one. Jesus’ parables are designed to lead people back to the word.

Imagine the expression on their faces as the priests realized, the ceremony they must now perform for a leper is the same ceremony performed for a priest, the high priest. This put the priests at a cross roads. They could either follow the voice of the Holy Spirit and the scriptures which clearly show God sees no difference between a leper in rags and the high priest, or they could become enraged at yet another miracle performed by Jesus. They could refuse to perform the ceremony based on the fact, in the eyes of the people, this would put a leper on the same level as the high priest.

Another point of interest in Leviticus 14. Atonement is mentioned three times in reference to cleaning a leper. In error the priests viewed leprosy as a punishment from God, and attributed the cause of the disease to sin. Knowing how the priests would misinterpret the disease, God included signs of an atonement in the ceremony. By recognizing the cleansing of the leper by Jesus, the priests were also confirming Jesus’ ability to forgive sins.

God has His own way of reaching out to teach a lesson.

Genesis 3:12: Satan’s Division of the Marriage

Genesis 3:12 MKJV And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.

Satan had accomplished his goals. He had caused Eve, then Adam to sin. His plan was so subtle, so decisive, most people miss Satan’s greatest accomplishment, opening a door to their seed.

The first reaction after sin was a feeling of shame, which created a separation between Adam, Eve, and God. They hid from God among the trees. For the first time in their lives, Adam and Eve did not look forward to their time with God. Their relationship with God was compromised. Their relationship with one another was also effected. Adam blamed Eve for the sin he was responsible for. Satan uses the same tactic today. A husband sins, and blames it on the actions of the wife. In Adam’s case the influence was real, the decision was still his own. Only he was responsible for his actions.

This lack of responsibility has been handed down from generation to generation across every culture on this planet. Instead of looking at their own deteriorated condition, people play the blame game like it is an acceptable excuse to sin. Another defect handed down through generations over the past six thousand years is the division between husband and wife created in Eden. Not only does this create stress between husband and wife, it also effects the children.

Children can see every point their father and mother do not agree on. Some children use this to their advantage. At the very least, this confuses the child. The greater the conflict between the parents, the greater confusion in the children. The instability opens a door for Satan to introduce doubt. Children begin questioning rules in the home, and society. If the gulf is large enough between the parents, the children will begin questioning God’s law.

The only way to break this trend is for both parents to draw so close to God, the children can not see any disagreement between the mother and father. Once they stand together, partners in Christ, they become an influence on the children not easily over thrown by Satan.

Genesis 3:6: Satan’s Temptation in Marriage

Genesis 3:6 KJV And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

What happened to Eve? What went through her head? She had just finished a conversation with a serpent in which she told it, “God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.” Eve just finishes telling a serpent she is going to die if she touches it, and what does she do? Does she take God’s word? There is no evidence in the Bible showing God told Eve about the tree of knowledge. The Bible shows Adam was informed of the tree before Eve was created. (Gen 2:16, 17) If Adam had the responsibility of teaching this information to Eve, it is a sign of trust God had in Adam, and a sign of love Adam had for Eve. This also illustrates the responsibility of the husband, who is to share and discuss God’s law with his wife.

The serpent tells Eve, “You shall not surely die, for God knows that in the day you eat of it, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5 MKJV) After a few simple words from a serpent, Eve begins to look at the tree in a whole new light. We don’t know how many times Eve had passed by this tree before this meeting. Adam may have shared God’s simple commandment while standing in front of the tree. Eve was aware of the danger involved, but chose to ignore it. Instead she looked upon the tree as something to be desired. It is hard to imagine anything that carries the curse of death as pleasant, but that is how Eve saw it through her eyes.

The Bible tells us Eve looked at the tree as a source of wisdom. Instead of heeding the word of her husband, Eve was willing to risk her relationship with Adam for a forbidden desire. Did Eve know Adam would follow her into a life of sin? I’ve heard many people say, “Adam loved his wife so much, he decided it was better to join her by eating the fruit, than to be without her.” This is one speculation. Another may be, Adam fell to the same temptation Satan uses today. When one marriage partner breaks a commandment, the other feels justified. This is the cause of divorce in many marriages. One partner in the marriage is tempted by an earthly desire they look at as pleasing. She falls to a false promise of a new experience. Instead of heading for the arms of Christ is prayer, like Adam, the husband follows the example of wife, and both fall.

Like rust on a car, it begins on the inside. You don’t notice the change. It may eat away for years before any signs show on the outside. When the rust tears through it creates an unsightly hole. In marriage sin has the same result. Sin creates a hole in your heart, life, a gulf in your relationship with God, and a gap in your marriage.

John 19:34-35: Blood and Water

John 19:34-35 KJV But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. (35) And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

While Jesus hung on the cross, God hid the face of the sun, casting the land into darkness. Jesus gave His last breath and died. A soldier looked up and declared, “truely this man was the Son of God, ” As the Sabbath drew near a request was made by the priests to break the legs of the prisoners. The soldier came to Jesus, looked up again, and could not bring himself to carry out the gruesome task. He examined Jesus’ face, looked at His chest to see if there was any movement. There was no movement, no sign of life. He was afraid to touch Jesus, so he called over another solder to examine the body. The second soldier looked at Jesus, and a moment later thrust his spear into Jesus’ side aiming for his heart, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Under the influence of the Holy Ghost John recorded the death of Jesus, adding details of the blood and water. John recorded this message from the Spirit, so others would believe. What does it mean to believe in the blood and water? What does the blood and water represent? Why did Jesus give blood and water as the last symbol of the cross, the first symbol of His death?

Both can represent a number of things. In relationship to Jesus and the cross, blood represents the forgiveness of sins, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;” Ephesians 1:7. Jesus also tells us, “this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Matthew 26:28.

Is a personal relationship with Jesus possible without understanding the meaning of the blood, His sacrifice? For the life of the flesh is in the blood. And I have given it to you on the altar to make an atonement for your souls. For it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves. Whoever partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who partakes of My flesh and drinks My blood dwells in Me, and I in him. Leviticus 17:11, John 6:53-56.

When I think of Jesus’ blood, I think of it as the only blood ever shed that can forgive sins. The blood is a symbol of His death, His sacrifice, first offered on the alter of the cross, now before the judgment throne of God in the Heavenly Sanctuary as an atonement, the purchase price for our sins. Jesus’ blood is a symbol of His love, the suffering He endured for our sins, all He gave up when He left His throne in Heaven to live on earth as a man.

Water also came out of the wound in Jesus’ side. Water can represent a number of things. Water represents baptism, an outward washing, an inward renewal, the display of a commitment, and a new relationship with Jesus through the Holy Ghost. John the Baptist tells us, “I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.” Mark 1:8. John the beloved of Jesus recognized the fact not everyone will understand the meaning of baptism, or Christ’s ministry, mission on earth, or see when Jesus is near. “I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;” John 1:26.

To understand the meaning of baptism, one must also be willing to accept the Holy Ghost. When He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. For He shall not speak of Himself, but whatever He hears, He shall speak. And He will announce to you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will receive of Mine and will announce it to you. John 16:13-14.

Water is a symbol of a growing faith where you are ready to accept things the Holy Spirit will announce, teach to you. God is a spirit, and they who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth. John 4:24. The Spirit has the power to guide me through God’s word, opening my mind and heart to His truth. To understand the Spirit I must first worship God in spirit and truth. I praise God as the Creator with more power and wisdom than I could ever imagine. God knows the beginning from the end. He has already planned my path. God knows what will happen before it occurs. Once I accept this, and worship God based on these facts, I am ready to accept God’s truth over my imagination, and what the world believes and teaches. Accepting God’s word and knowledge with an open mind is drinking deep from His wellspring of life. Ignoring, misinterpreting, or judging God’s word with my own imagination is like trying to survive without food and water. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: Amos 8:11 KJV.

The water from Jesus’ side also represents everlasting life. Jesus told this to the woman at the well. “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14. God’s word and everlasting life have a direct connection. I have to understand God’s word to know how to ask for forgiveness, “that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.” Ephesians 5:26. I have to know God’s word to know how to ask Jesus to change my life. God’s word and His Spirit also show me how to reach other people, to serve in a personal ministry for Jesus as His representative. Just like water, everlasting life is a multifaceted subject, it must be studied from many angles to gain the most basic understanding.

Searching the words blood and water in the Bible provides a verse to consider on quite a different level. The Bible also tells us about others who recognized Jesus as King, but did not really believe the evidence before their eyes.

Matthew 27:24 MKJV But when Pilate saw that it gained nothing, but rather that a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person. You see to it.

To learn why Pilate used water to symbolically wash the blood of Jesus from his hands, we have to look at some of the preceding texts.

Matthew 27:11 MKJV And Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say it.

Something made Pilate ask Jesus if he was the King of the Jews. Jesus’ simple answer some how left an impression on Pilate. As governor it was Pilate’s business to gather all the news he could about every possible threat. Since the priests viewed Jesus as a threat, they must have been Pilate’s greatest source of information. Some one as detailed and crafty as Pilate would not have put his trust in a single source. To investigate such an important matter, he most certainly would have dispatched his own spies to watch Jesus and report His every move.

Pilate most likely heard every word of Jesus’ sermons and parables from more than one source. He must have received reports of every person Jesus healed, and exact figures on the number of people who followed Him. Pilate must have had more information about Jesus than what is written in the four gospels. This illustrates an important point concerning those who have knowledge of Jesus, and question Him just as Pilate did, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

God does not hide His messages in His word, but clearly reveals them. The term, “King of the Jews is repeated three times in the book of Matthew, and five times by Mark. When we review these, we can clearly see a pattern develop.

Matthew 27:11 MKJV And Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, Are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say it.

Matthew 27:29 MKJV And plaiting a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

Matthew 27:37 MKJV And they put up over His head His accusation, written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Mark 15:2 MKJV And Pilate asked Him, Are you the king of the Jews? And answering He said to him, You say it.

Mark 15:9 MKJV But Pilate answered them, saying, Do you desire that I release to you the King of the Jews?

Mark 15:12 MKJV And Pilate answered and said again to them, What then do you desire that I should do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?

Mark 15:18 MKJV And they began to salute Him, Hail, King of the Jews!

Mark 15:26 MKJV And the inscription of His accusation was written over Him, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Pilate and his solders recognized Jesus as King, but they still crucified Him. They made Jesus suffer more than He deserved. They stood there and watched Him die on the cross. Pilate had all the facts, but let popularity, personal gain, self satisfaction, and the strangest fact, people he knew he should not agree with influence his decision. Jesus’ answer touched Pilate’s heart, which made him declare Jesus as King, but he found a way to harden his heart. Pilate condemned Jesus.

Pilate used his own water to wash the blood of Jesus which existed only in his own imagination off his hands. He didn’t accept the facts he knew. He didn’t accept Jesus’ words, pointing back to what he had been told by witnesses. As the scriptures show, Pilate repeated the process again and again, each time declaring, “Jesus the King of the Jews.” Saying Jesus is King was not enough to change Pilate. Repeating it was not enough to make him stop condemning Jesus. Instead of looking to Jesus, Pilate tried covering his sin by placing his guilt on the Jews.

Revelation 1:5-7 MKJV even from Jesus Christ the faithful Witness, the First-born from the dead and the Ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, (6) and made us kings and priests to God and His Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (7) Behold, He comes with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, and those who pierced Him will see Him, and all the kindreds of the earth will wail because of Him. Even so, Amen.
